On three separate occasions on April 6, 2023, the Highland Police Department had contact with complaints relating to Wendell L. McCallister. Throughout the day, McCallister was located each time to discuss and determine the extent of the issues and citizen concerns.  Through further investigative efforts, officers were able to develop probable cause to arrest McCallister.  McCallister was again located during the evening of April 6, 2023, and taken into custody.  During contact with McCallister, they were able to locate numerous stolen items from Rural King and Walmart and numerous weapons. It was determined that McCallister would be taken into custody pending a warrant application.  During the arrest phase of the investigation, McCallister resisted arrest and spit on officers.  McCallister was taken into custody and transferred to the custody of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office pending formal charges.

On April 10, 2023, the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office charged:

Criminal Trespass to Real Property (Class B)
Aggravated Battery (Class 2)
Unlawful Possession of Weapons by a Felon (Class 3)
Unlawful Possession of Weapons by a Felon (Class 3)
Retail Theft Under $300 (2nd Subsequent Offense) (Class 4)
Retail Theft Under $300 (2nd Subsequent Offense) (Class 4)
Failure to Comply with Conditions of Bail Bond

The Honorable Ronald Slemer set the bond at $75,000.  For the offense of Failure to Comply with Conditions of Bail Bond, McCallister was given no bond.
