Fire Department

The Highland Fire Department was established in April of 1860 and was only the second fire department recognized by Madison County. For over 160 years, the Highland Fire Department has been providing education and emergency services to the City of Highland. The Highland Fire Department responds to approximately 250 calls per year and covers the Highland city limit of 7.6 square miles, including the Highland City Lake, and provides mutual aid for the neighboring fire districts. The Highland Fire Department is all volunteer and operates from two firehouses. The newly remodeled Fire Station No. 1 is located at 1122 Broadway and the new Public Safety Building is located at 12990 Troxler Ave. The 28 dedicated volunteers operate the department’s three engines, one aerial truck, 2 rescue boats, 2 utility vehicles, and a special operations trailer. Currently 17 of those are certified firefighters and 9 are certified fire science instructors. The department has a Class 4 ISO rating, which places Highland in the top 15% in the state of Illinois.
