Property Maintenance

The City has adopted the 2012 International Property Maintenance Code.  The purpose of the code is to protect the public health, safety and welfare in all existing structures, residential and nonresidential, and on all existing premises and exterior property by establishing minimum requirements and standards. City inspectors regularly receive complaints for potential code violations, which begins the code enforcement process. The inspector will log the complaint, visit the site, and determine if a violation exists.  If a violation is present, the inspector will contact the property owner and send a violation notice requesting corrective action. If the property owner fails to address the violations within a set period of time, the matter will be forwarded to Circuit Court and fines will be imposed. Because property maintenance issues can be contentious, complaints may be reported anonymously.
