Silver Lake Appreciation Day – September 6, 2008

“Boatloads of  fun.”  This is a family event with activities for everyone.   Programs and activities begin at 10:00am and continue throughout the day.  There will be a children’s aquatic species viewing area, free hot dogs and prizes.  Please join us, take a boat tour and learn about your Silver Lake.

Upcoming Projects

PW-09-07 – Falcon and Quail Dr Connections

The City of Highland has contracted with Korte & Luitjohan Contractors, Inc. to construct the above referenced project. The proposed improvements will consist of connecting the existing street pavements of Falcon Drive and Quail Drive with concrete pavement, concrete curb and gutter, storm sewer, and water mains. In addition, storm sewer extensions to the north and west are proposed. The project is set to begin in September, with completion expected by the end of December.

IL 143 Sidewalk and Handicap Ramp Construction

This project consists of removal of existing concrete sidewalks and replacement with handicap ramps at various intersections around town, as well as construction of a new sidewalk along IL 143 from Troxler Way to Highland Crossing.

This project is currently being reviewed by IDOT and will be out for bid shortly.

Council Approved

·       The bid for PW-09-08 Sanitary Sewer CIPP and Manhole Lining was awarded to Insituform of Chesterfield, Missouri.

·       The bid for the 2008 MFT Sidewalk Project was to Korte & Luitjohan Contractors, Inc. of Highland.

PW-02-08 – Hemlock Extension

The bid opening for the Hemlock Street Extension Project will be at 10:00am on Thursday September 11, 2008.  The project is an extension of Hemlock Street from U.S. Highway 40 north to Sportsman Road. The construction includes 3-12’ wide travel lanes, 2-4’ wide bike lanes, concrete curb and gutter, and storm sewer.~ Sidewalks will be bid as an alternate. The City Council will consider including them in the project at the time of award.

The project is expected to begin in late October and continue through next spring.

6th St. Milling and Overlaying

The bid opening for the 6th Street Milling and Overlaying project will be at 10:00am on Wednesday September 10, 2008 at City Hall.  The work consists of milling the existing pavement on 6th Street from Pine Street to Poplar Street and installing new hot mix asphalt surface. The project is expected to begin in early October.

Poplar St. Widening and Resurfacing Phase 2

The proposed improvement to Poplar Street will consist of widening, where necessary, the existing pavement and resurfacing the roadway to construct a 32-foot wide pavement. The pavement will service two 12-foot vehicular lanes and two 4-foot bicycle lanes. The improvements include a roundabout at the intersection of Poplar Street and Broadway. Scheduled improvements include concrete curb and gutter, sidewalk on one side and storm sewer.

The contractor has opened the north side of the project to traffic and removal of pavement for the next phase of construction has begun.

The city thanks all the residents affected by this project for their patience. The city would also like to remind all the residents avoid the use of Lemon Street when possible and use the marked detour route when traveling through Highland.

Detour 1-IL Route 160-Close IL Rte 160 on Poplar St. from Broadway to Main St.  IL Rte 160 traffic will be detoured onto US Rte 40 and Hemlock St.

Detour 2-Poplar St-Close Poplar St. from Poplar Dr. to Broadway.  Poplar St. traffic will be detoured onto Lindenthal Ave., Washington St., Broadway, Cypress Street and 6th Street.
